DAY FOR NIGHT FESTIVAL

GHOST BEAST — Animating Fur Sculptures with Projection

In 2016, the Day for Night art and music festival in Houston, Texas, was set to feature an installation by the infamous Icelandic fashion designer Hrafnhildur Arnardottir. Known widely as Shoplifter, she is internationally recognized for her large-scale hair sculptures and costume design for the celebrated Icelandic musician, Bjork.

Shoplifter tasked The Endless Co. with designing projections that would animate the 5,000-square foot fur installation into a “Ghost Beast.”

Our projection mapping techniques beamed tailored animations onto the surfaces of Shoplifter’s amorphous work, unifying the parts to look like one living being trapped in a metal cage. The colorful projections simulated wind and rendered fluid, fractal movements onto the fur, giving the static synthetic hair a hypnotic dynamism.

The combination of meticulous sculptural design, large scale Christie projection and spatialized soundscapes enabled a communal immersive experience that entranced festival-goers.

The exhibition enriched a musical lineup that featured music icons such as Bjork, Aphex Twin, and Travis Scott.
