Modeling the Future of the Los Angeles River
The City of Los Angeles commissioned renowned architect Frank Gehry to redesign and revitalize the area surrounding the LA River. As the work begins on Gehry’s plan for a contemporary and green landscape, the project will significantly affect the neighboring communities.
Superbright, Verizon, and Vrai Pictures partnered with The Endless Co. to build an augmented reality experience that engages community members on the LA River project.
We designed the 3D assets for an AR visualization that invites neighbors into the major design decisions that will impact their home for years to come.
SOLUTION
- Accurate 3D topographical map of LA River plan with 100+ custom designed and modeled art assets
- Interactive modules, so users can toggle between animated visualizations of the proposed landscape changes: conservation of nearby nature, reshaped rivers for flood protection, and placement of bridges to connect neighborhoods
- AR display designed to track perfectly to wooden sculptural model
RESULTS
- Delivered the prototype to Gehry’s team and municipal stakeholders
- Pioneered a new type of open communication between architect and community
- Made transparent the large infrastructural decision-making that is typically opaque to the communities most affected by urban development
THE TECH
- 100+ 3D ASSETS DESIGNED LIKE GEHRY’S PAPER, WOOD, WIRE
- AR APP FOR iPAD AND iOS
