Projection Mapping the Hypercube
VR World, New York’s premiere immersive arcade, embarked on a futuristic redesign of the space with concept architect Mark Foster Gage.
The team brought on The Endless Co. to projection map one of MFGA’s sculptural installations in the arcade: the hypercube.
The hypercube is a floor-to-ceiling construction with jagged and dynamic edges.
Our challenge was to precisely project visuals onto the sculpture, so the blank cubes could be animated with colorful crystalline visuals.
We first studied the exact dimensions of the hypercube, conducting a hyper-accurate volumetric scan of the piece down to the millimeter.
With this 3D scan, we then used Touch Designer to create a system of exotic textural projections that fit the dimensions of the sculpture. This way, not a single beam of light bleeds from the edges.
Our team designed a series of visuals for the permanent installation: fire, ice, fractals, and mesmerizing minerals can be layered onto the sculptural surface in an infinite number of combinations.
The installation remains a centerpiece of the largest VR arcade in North America. Our custom media server enables any guest DJs or performers to input their own visuals and transform the hypercube.
